Earlier this year I joined a group of talented wedding professionals to experience Belmond’s newest property in Riviera Maya: Belmond Maroma. Situated on the edge of the jungle where the Caribbean waves break on white sand, the newly-renovated hotel is a jewel among the resorts dotting the Riviera. So let’s get down to it: here’s why you should plan your destination Mexico wedding at Belmond Maroma.
How does it feel?
A wedding at Belmond Maroma would feel intimate and meaningful. The resort itself was built that way, with 72 rooms and villas on the property, and each space incorporating local artisans and a purposeful touch. Individually hand-painted tiles, local wood accents, and colorful handmade textiles fill the rooms, making this resort feel like a cozy home. The property is large (200 acres) but the lodgings are not sprawling. While many resorts in the Riviera Maya offer bikes and ongoing golf cart services to take you from your room to dining areas and pools, Belmond Maroma keeps everything close and within easy walking distance. Practically speaking, this isn’t just a simple convenience. When you’re trying to look your best and keep your hair/makeup from sweating out (we are in the Mexican jungle after all), taking a few steps rather than biking or waiting for a golf cart service to transport you around the property is an important consideration.
Beauty and Conservation
Any wedding photos at Belmond Maroma would be unique and would instantly transport you back to a location like no other in the world. It only takes a few moments of looking at the architecture and artisanal touches at Belmond Maroma to understand that beauty and craftsmanship is important. Belmond looked beyond the aesthetics and made a point to incorporate local history, legend, artists, and conservation into the rebirth of this resort. This attention to detail is evident in the physical structure and also in the preservation of the surrounding natural beauty. Belmond Maroma boasts an on-site nursery with 2000+ native plants, a turtle conservation program, and a Melipona bee sanctuary. The Executive Chef is dedicated to sustainable fishing, and the kitchens purchase and cultivate local ingredients (this also extends to the bar, whose mixologists make mixers from local ingredients).
The Final Pitch
Any wedding in this part of Mexico is going to be beautiful; there’s no question that Riviera Maya is one of the most picturesque and magical parts of the world. Beyond beauty, there is the experience, both for yourselves as a couple and for your families and guests. Belmond Maroma offers a unique experience of intimacy, with a little something for everyone. If you (or your guests) are interested in a terrific gastronomic experience, the food is beyond reproach. For those who are looking for a tropical experience by the water, the perfectly-tasseled umbrellas are waiting for you by the pastel waters of the Caribbean (or the most picturesque pool, day or night). If it’s a luxury experience you are looking for, the incredible staff at Belmond Maroma leave no stone unturned to ensure you have the stay of your dreams (I still miss the morning coffee service on my balcony – I have tried my best to recreate it at home).
